Weave a cedar heart or bracelet

Join master cedar weaver and Haida elder Todd Giihlgiigaa Devries for a hands-on workshop exploring the history, cultural significance, and stories of cedar bark weaving. Create either a cedar heart symbolizing Every Child Matters while reflecting on healing and reconciliation or make a woven bracelet. All materials provided.

This workshop is suited for 10 and older. For participants who are 10 and younger, a parent/caregiver is required to participate. Each registered participant will receive a kit.

While teaching how to weave, Todd will also share what cedar means to us living on the land of Coast Salish Peoples as well as the legend stories told over the centuries from the ancestors. This is a great family activity to weave together or for an individual to join this weaving circle.

About the instructor

Todd Giihlgiigaa ('Heath-gee-ga') first started weaving hats and baskets with cedar bark in 2001. In 2010 he moved to Vancouver, BC and started teaching weaving techniques to anyone who was interested and with whichever material they had on hand. By 2016, He started to teach full-time with the mandate: Get everyone a cedar bark hat by teaching them the skill of how to weave one of their own.
