How do Art Tours work?

Ferry Building Gallery staff do extensive research prior to putting together a tour with the intent of offering a balanced mix of spaces and types of artists. For one-day tours, we usually visit five to six studios and always allow time for lunch. Depending on the tour, we may pre-order lunch, but participants are always welcome to bring their own.

We typically spend 20 to 30 minutes at each location depending on the general level of interest from the group. The artists usually speak briefly about their work, creative process, background and inspirations.

Questions and dialogue are encouraged! Some tours include a guided tour of a gallery or museum, and admission is usually included in the cost.

I’ve never been on an art tour before. What should I know and expect?

We usually get off the bus at least five times and tour a variety of spaces. A short amount of walking is often involved. Some studios are small and won’t have places to sit.

Unfortunately, tours are often not accessible by mobility devices. Please contact gallery staff if you have any concerns and we will do our best to accommodate.

We often tour spaces that are not typically open to the public. Please be respectful of the artists’ private spaces.

Can I see a map of tour locations before I register?

Since registration is available prior to when tour locations are confirmed, this is not usually feasible. We also think an element of surprise makes for exciting adventures and encounters with art. However, feel free to inquire about the tour locations if it is within one month of the tour date.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Participants can bring their own water bottle, which can be filled at the gallery prior to boarding the tour bus. Comfortable walking shoes are suggested and we ask that you dress appropriately for the weather. Our tour bus will be locked, so items can be left inside.

Can I take pictures?

Pictures are often allowed but always ask the artist first.

General tour guidelines

  • please refrain from wearing perfumes or colognes because these can cause problems for people with sensitivities.
  • do not bring large bags and backpacks into studio spaces. You may leave them on the tour bus.
  • refrain from touching furniture, art and household items. Ask the artist for permission before you do.
